ICD-REFINITIV Islamic Finance Development Report 2020: PROGRESSING THROUGH ADVERSITY

The global economy is showing signs of slowing down. Growth for the developed economies is expected to reduce to 1.7 percent in 2020, while emerging and developing economies may experience an increase to 4.6 percent in the same period.

ICD and Refinitiv, the leading global provider of financial markets data, are proud to present the findings of the seventh edition of the Islamic Finance Development Report: Shifting Dynamics. We hope that the analyses and information in the report, which is based on the Islamic Finance Development Indicator (IFDI), will serve as the most updated guide to the landscape of the Islamic finance industry for its various stakeholders.

World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business Index provides objective, quantitative measures of business regulations and the protection of property rights of local firms in 190 economies, out of which 50 are ICD member countries. The rankings are determined by sorting the aggregate scores on 10 topics, each consisting of several indicators, giving equal weight to each topic. The source of the data is from Doing Business Report 2019, as of May 2018.

Development institutions are an invaluable part of the finance industry landscape, and in the first week of April the 44th Annual Meeting of the Islamic Development Bank Group (IsDB) took place, introducing the bank’s pioneering new five-year plan.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) face a key dilemma. Although major multilateral institutions like the World Bank and the other core multilateral development banks (MDBs) have played a leadership role in shaping the SDG financing framework, there is a significant misalignment between the structure of these institutions and SDG financing needs. Specifically, the SDGs put countries, not multilateral institutions or foreign donors, at the forefront in achieving desired outcomes.

The International Development Finance Club (IDFC), created in 2011, brings together 24 leading international, national and sub regional development banks from Africa, Asia, Europe, and Central and South America. At the One Planet Summit in Paris in December 2017, the IDFC, joined by the multilateral development banks, issued a joint statement on aligning their financial flows with the Paris Agreement.
